I’ve been away juicing!

For the last couple of months, I’ve had a lot of trouble finding foods that made me feel good and energized. Either the food I craved was too heavy and would make me fall asleep (I took a lot of naps!) feeling like a giant slug, or it was not nourishing enough and would leave me hangry. It came to a point where all my thoughts and decisions were around food, and, trust me, that’s not healthy! I spent a lot of time reading and watching documentaries (resources coming up in my next post!), and I decided to try out incorporating lots and lots and lots and lots of greens to every meal.

green juice

I started with super green smoothies incorporating spinach, baby kale, arugula and spirulina. It was a revolution! I finally didn’t feel like I needed to go back to bed as soon as I had breakfast, and that was amazing! When making my smoothies, I always aimed for 3/4 greens to 1/4 fruits. I also added some protein powder or pumpkin seeds to make it a complete meal. The finishing touch: 1 or 2 nuts or some chia seeds for some healthy fats. These smoothies not only taste good, they are packed with nutrients! After starting my days with these for a few days, I could see a real difference in my energy levels. I am completely hooked on them!

Because greens had such an amazing effect, I decided to take it one step further and invest in a juicer. I watched so many videos comparing different juicers, but I finally set my heart (and money) on an Omega juicer. I’ve never been so happy to spend almost 400$ on a machine! The juicer is super easy to use, easy to clean and takes little space on my counter. This machine feels strong and sturdy. I’m also very pleased with the 10 years guarantee.  The best part of it all though is that this is an amazing juicer!

I’ve been using it to juice lots and lots of leafy greens like kale, parsley, spinach, coriander, lettuce and cabbage without any issue. Harder vegetables are just as easy: beets (and their greens) and carrots just zoom through. And, of course, everything in between is super simple as well: cucumber, apples, lemons, limes, ginger, turmeric and celery. There’s just nothing this machine can’t juice!

In my opinion, the omega is worth every penny. The first time I made juice with this machine, I was really surprised to see how delicious it was! I was expecting something that tasted very green, in a I’m-only-drinking-this-because-it’s-healthy kind of way. I was surprised to see how good it tasted to me and even more surprised to find myself craving green juice! That’s right, I now have my daily dose of green juice, and I just can’t skip it! After a month of juicing, I feel so much more energized and clean, from the inside out. Additionally to this, my skin has improved, my hair and nails grow stronger and faster and I crave less junk food. Completely hooked on that too!

The only downsize to juicing is the quatity of vegetables that is needed. I’ve been astonishing cashiers in my neighbourhood when I check out with 12 heads of lettuce, 4 heads of celery and all the greens they had. After a few weeks, it seemed like an unsustainable habbit for my budget. I decided to give the farm next door a try: there, I am able to find some fresh, local and organic vegetables for a very fair price. My trick: to go at the end of the day and sweep up everything that’s left. Much more sustainable than the grocery store, it also means I get organic veggies everyday!

Anyways, all this to say that if you are on the fense about buying a juicer or have trouble with your energy levels, adding more greens might be a great area to explore. I really hope you’ll give it a try and tell me how it makes you feel!

Pur et Simple, a restaurant review /// Critique de resto

This week-end really was the perfect summer week-end: warmth, sun, light breeze and clear skies. My boyfriend and I took advantage of this by exploring our area, and we stumbled across the Pur et Simple restaurant right on time for brunch. Perfect!

This restaurant is an organic and vegan place which focuses on serving whole foods prepared in the most delicious ways. What’s great about this restaurant is that they have a very nice terrasse which allows you to really take advantage of the summer. The inside of the restaurant is also very cute and has shabby chic vibes, but I recommend eating outside if it’s a nice day! As it was brunch time, we ordered the breakfast crepe and the burrito.

The breakfast crepe in all its glory!

The breakfast crepe was delicious! Made with an amaranth flour blend, the crepe itself was soft and wholesome. It was filled with scrambled tofu and coconut bacon and covered with a rich hollandaise-like sauce. The flavours and textures were really well-balanced and the avocado topping and salad were the perfect complement to this nourishing breakfast plate.

Look at this beautiful burrito!

The burrito was splendid as well: homemade tortilla, slightly spicy black bean filling and a glorious cashew cream topping. This cashew cream was really delicious and brought the right amount of tanginess to the whole plate. Served with guacamole and tortilla chips, this will keep your fueled up for a long while!

We really enjoyed our meal, and we will be back for sure! The service was friendly and attentive, and the prices were reasonable. I have to say that the main dishes were fairly priced; the smoothies and desserts seemed a little bit more pricey (but the cakes looked amazing!). So, if ever you are in the Bromont area, I would strongly recommend checking this place out!

The breakfast crepe in all its glory!

Floramama and beautiful organic flowers

In my ideal world, my house would be filled with flowers all year long, in every room, multiple bouquets per room, in all colors, all the time and for no particular reason but to enjoy them. Flowers are so wonderful in their variety and simple elegance. I feel that adding flowers to any room suddenly makes everything more fun and lively. However, even if all flowers are beautiful, they are not equal when it comes to their environmental footprint. Think of it a minute. Flowers are plants, cultivated in fields and are therefore treated in ways similar to ‘regular’ agriculture and all that implies. That’s why I try to buy local and organic flowers when I can. And, luckily enough Floramama is here to save the day!

Floramama is a flower farm in the Eastern Townships that has been created a few years ago by Chloé, a passionate young farmer. Since then, she has put a lot of time and energy into producing exceptional fresh flowers. I have a particular soft spot for her ranunculus and anemones.

She too brings her flowers to the Laurier Farmers Market every week. Check out her facebook page to see when she’s coming and also have an idea of the flowers that will be ready for the market. I love her flowers because they have a simple charm to them: I don’t know if it’s because they are not your typical flowers or if it’s because they are so fresh, but they make me feel shabby chic just looking at them. They also keep a lot longer than most flowers you can find at your florist.

If you fall in love with these beauties, Chloé offers a ‘basket’ option where you get to support her farm through a CSA kind off system: you can subscribe to receive bouquets every week or every two weeks. I did this last summer and loved it: fresh, beautifully composed flowers every week! What a dream!

I really suggest checking her out if you are in the Montreal region, or if you love flowers! Even if it’s just to take a look at her wonderfully colourful market stand, you won’t be disappointed. And, as you will probably succumb to the temptation and buy a few flowers, take a minute to thank Chloe for her amazing work. It’s so inspiring!

Oneka Shampoos, a product review

If you have been following me for a while, you know that my favourite place to go is probably Beat et Betterave in the beautiful Frelighsburg village. Well, my friends Eloise and Ludo are not the only ones to have taken this tiny village as their playground.

Two doors away, you can find the Oneka headquarters. Another family business, Oneka offers a range of shampoos, creams, lotions and soaps. I tried their shampoo first last June while visiting the Beat, and thoroughly fell in love with their Cedar and Sage scent.

IMG_2079.JPG

After briefly meeting with Stacey and Phillippe at their farm over the summer because of a Joel Salatin workshop, I never looked back. These are two of the most authentic and rigorous people I have met, and it shows in their products.

The shampoos are wonderfully scented with natural, local and organic plant essences. They also do not contain any environmentally damaging chemical components which means that they are good for you, but also for the waters in which they end up.

IMG_2077.JPG

As if this was not enough, you can also refill your plastic bottles in different health food stores around the city of Montreal. This is a big thing for me because the use of plastic was one of the reasons why I abandoned traditional shampoos for shampoo bars.

Now the real deal: are they actually good for your hair? YES! These shampoos make my hair soft, cleaned but not dry, and oh so light! I really like how gentle they are, and how they don’t weigh my hair down. As a result I have a ton of volume, and my hair is more manageable. Also, because they all contain rosemary essential oil, these shampoos will help your hair grow strong and healthy. I have seen a real difference in the growth speed of my hair.

IMG_2074.JPG

I really enjoy the three scent they offer, but usually use the Goldenseal and Citrus one during the summer, and the Angelica and Lavender during the winter. As for the Cedar and Sage one, I just grab it whenever! Because my hair tend to be dryer during the cold season, I also like to use their Angelica and Lavender conditioner at the tip of my hair. I leave this is as a mask for a few minutes before rinsing, and my hair is much softer! However, if you don’t like scented products, they also have an unscented range.

So, big love for Oneka products, and to the creators of this great line for making products that are respectful of the environment and people. How amazing! Seriously, you need to smell these!
